Lake Ugii is a fresh watered
lake located in steppe. It covers 25 square km in area, 7 km long and 5 km wide.
The lake is 15 meters deep at its deepest point. Ice sheets form over Ugii Lake
between November and May. Researchers have discovered 14 different species of
fish, 27 species of floating plants, and 48 species of floating animals. It is
a stopover point for more than 150 species of migrating water birds. The lake
was registered as a part of the east-north Asian international network system
that protects goose and duck flocks, due to the large populations of cape
barren goose and a spoon bill in the lake. Also the lake is worshiped so locals
prohibit women to get into the water. In 1971, Ramsar convention registered
Ugii Lake as a protected water ecosystem.
