CODE: ST-2 GOL MOD II – ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR

Overview

This tour allows seeing the ancient stone monuments, deer stone, tomb, the ruin of ancient city relating to the period of Xiongnu, Turkic, Uyghur, Kidan state and the Great Mongol Empire, which is in current Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai, Bulgan and Tuv provinces while getting acquainted with the culture of ancient people. Mongolia has been successfully organizing an independent archaeological excavation in recent years and the "Gol Mod II" excavation was awarded as "The Top Ten Archaeological Finds in the World" in 2019. The tour also allows seeing Kharkhorin, the capital of Great Mongol Empire in the XIII century, the museum showing the history of it, Erdenezuu monastery which is the first Buddhist monastery built in Mongolia as well as Khustai Nuruu National Park where Przewalski’s horse, an ancestor of modern domesticated horse, live. If you want, you can also ride a camel and horse. Take note that the half of the trip will go on a dirt road.

Itinerary

  • Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
  • Take a short break to explore UB and to see the museums in the city.
  • 09:00 Drive to the Kharkhorin & Erdenezuu.
  • Lunch in a tourist camp.
  • Visit Kharakhorin museum, Buddhist Temple foundation relating to the XIII century.
  • Stay at the tourist camp nearby Orkhon River.
  • Visit Erdene Zuu monastery, the first monastery built in Mongolia.
  • Drive to the ruin of Ordu-Baliq, the capital of Uyghur after lunch.
  • Drive to Taikhar Rock passing by Tsetserleg town. Taikhar Rock contains over 150 rock inscriptions relating to YII-XYIII century.
  • Stay in tourist camp.
  • Drive to Gol Mod II, the aristocratic tomb of Xiongnu. There are over 200 tombs dating back to AD 80-100 and over 30 are studied. Rare artifacts have been found and awarded one of the "Top Ten Archaeological Finds" of 2019 in the world.
  • Stay in Ger camp.
  • Drive to deer stones in Jargalant relating to YI-Y century BC.
  • Drive to the ruins of the Khar Khul Khaan. The residual ruins of the XIII-XIY century aristocracy.
  • Drive to Gol Mod I, which is the tomb of Xiongnu kings, passing by Erdenemandal soum. There are over 400 tombs and interesting artifacts found.
  • Stay in a nomadic family.
  • Drive to Ugii Lake passing by Battsengel soum.
  • Drive to Khushuu Tsaidam memorial complex where the last King of the Turkic Empire used to live, which was also registered in UNESCO.
  • Stay in tourist camp.
  • See the ancient city ruins, such as Khar Bukh Balgas relating to IX-X century, Chin Tolgoi Balgas which is the residual of Kidan state and Prince Tsogt’s white house which belongs to the XY century.
  • Drive to Khustai Nuruu National Park.
  • See the wild horses discovered by the Russian researcher Przewalski from Russian Empire.
  • Stay in tourist camp
  • Drive early to stone monuments which belong Turkic period.
  • Drive back to the Ulaanbaatar city. On the way, there is a ruin of Khar Tunel which was built by Toirol Khan before the age of the Great Mongol Empire.
  • Arrival in Ulaanbaatar city. 
  • Flight day back to the country.
