TIC 15.1 (SOUTH GOBI, TERKH LAKE, KHUVSGUL LAKE)

TERKH WHITE LAKE: It is located next to the Khorgo volcanic crater. The water that flows down from the Terkh river Khangai mountain range fills this  basin that is dammed by a volcanic rock mound. This lake is now stagnant.

It is a fresh water lake that is 16km long, and 6 km at its widest, the total surface area of the lake is 61 км2. The lake is 20 m deep and it is 2060m above sea level. The Terkh white lake is the destination of over 10 rivers, while only the “Suman” river flows out.

There is a small island in the middle of the lake, this is a rebound location for birds to nest.

The legend of Terkh lake’s name is as follows: On the east side of the lake there was a large hill. When people would wander over the hill, they would see the lake and exclaim  “look at that big lake”.
